Sleep Paralysis is a phenomenon in which people, either falling asleep or waking up, temporarily experience the inability to move. Scientifically its the transition state between wakefulness and rest characterized by complete muscle atonia (muscle weakness).

I’ve known several people who have had sleep paralysis, who have even made characters who share the same trait. I’ve never suffered from it myself but I find the folklore around it fascinating, because no matter what nation of origin it always has to do with the visitation of a demon or vengeful spirit who either sits on, restrains, or strangles said victim. And so I drew my own little depiction of it, complete with a demon girl puking black stuff on a guy.

I dunno, sue me.

Here’s a fun little piece of SEGA history I dug up a while back. DecapAttack, as it is known to the United States, is actually a westernized version of a game called Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure, which was based on the anime series Magical Hat. The game itself can be seen as an updated version of the NES game Kid Kool and the SEGA Master System game Psycho Fox.

I can only infer that the game was altered to appeal to American gamers, who would have had no idea what Magical Hat was. What we ended up getting was a much darker game about a headless mummy named Chuck D. Head, whose face was implanted into his torso, as opposed to the bright colorful world seen in the original Magical Hat game. DecapAttack is a game I remember fondly, and now it’s interesting to me for a whole new reason.

This is probably the most amazing thing I found out years later.

And the thing is, it’s not just a clone, each version has completely changed graphics and different powerups and different music. If you’ve ever played the games, you’ll notice that there’s a reoccurring bouncy pole featured in all of them. In Decap Attack tho, if you bounce on it’s top spike, the blood balls will deplete and inject life into your butt (a neat trick if you’re ever low).

Back in the day, a game clone that was just as good, or even better than the original was fucking rare. This is one of those times I’m glad it’s gotten a western touch, otherwise I’d probably never gotten to play it as a kid. (tho nowadays direct ports are all over the place)
